Cost of Congestion
Spatio-Temporal Web Map

Measuring the real cost of road congestion on public transit and school bus operations across Durham County, NC and Pinellas County, FL.

Durham Co., NC & Pinellas Co., FL Spatio-Temporal Analysis Transit & School Buses

Roadway congestion causes measurable delays for public transportation and school buses — increasing operational costs, reducing service efficiency, and forcing passengers to spend unnecessary time traveling. This research quantifies that impact using three datasets to calculate time of delay for all transit and school buses in two study counties.

Datasets used to calculate bus delay

2

Counties studied across NC and FL

100%

Of transit and school bus routes analyzed

Research applications

  • Transit agencies can use results to adjust routes spatially and temporally to minimize congestion delay in the short term
  • School districts can identify which bus routes are most impacted by peak-hour congestion and adjust bell times or route paths
  • Municipalities and regional planners can incorporate delay data into long-term transportation planning and infrastructure investment
  • Results support equity analysis by identifying which communities experience disproportionate delay burdens

GTFS Data & Applications

General Transit Feed Specification data for North Carolina — current feeds, archived collections, and high-frequency stop analysis for statewide transit planning.

Statewide · North Carolina Updated May 2026

The General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) is the open data standard used by transit agencies worldwide to publish schedules, routes, stops, and fares. The ITRE Public Transportation Group collects, validates, and archives GTFS feeds for North Carolina agencies — making this data freely available for trip planners, researchers, and regional planning tools.
